Aiden

"What the hell are you up to now, boy?" Major Trell thundered as he strode into Aiden's office. His thick red mustache quivered in anger as his blue eyes emotionlessly took in Aiden's paperwork covered desk and Ernest rushing to his feet to stand at attention.

"What the hell am I doing with what, Sir?" Aiden said as he slowly got to his feet. The niceties like standing at attention and saluting were unnecessary in Aiden's case. He had led his part of the coup as an equal with Major Trell, so even though he was technically subordinate to Trell now he could get away with a hell of a lot more than most.

"Here I am trying to build a wall to keep the city safe from bandits and the like and you're squirreling away my contingency fund to some secret project!" Trell's hands were on his hips aggressively and his glare was piercing.

Aiden wasn't frightened in the least. Major Trell wasn't scary in comparison to some of the criminals he had put behind bars. "It's not a secret project. I've filed all the paperwork for the permits and you signed off on them."

"I signed off on an investigation to stop some underage prostitution ring. What the hell do you need that much money for?"

Aiden grinned. "I'm rebuilding the docks. The pier that was damaged in that storm? If there's any money left I'd also like to commission a trade ship."

"Why the fuck do you want to do that? Not that I'm saying it's not a damned good idea and definitely on my list after the wall," Trell added with a wave of his hand in front of his face, "but why now? And what the hell does it have to do with the prostitution ring?"

"According to the Prince, the kids are most likely being held somewhere on the docks," Aiden explained. "Since we need guards to watch over the construction and make sure nothing goes wrong, I'm hoping the pimp won't notice a few extra guards poking around the warehouses at the same time. Killing two birds with one stone, as it were."

Trell snorted and shook his head slowly. "Damn it, boy, I know you're used to being high handed and all—considering who your parents were—but could you at least talk to me first before starting a big project like this?"

"My parents had nothing to do with my decision. My job as Captain of the Guard did." This time Aiden was the one glaring.

Trell let out another snort. "You ever think about how you became Captain? You're what? Twenty-eight? Every previous Captain was a minimum of forty before they reached that position. What made you so special? No, don't answer that," Trell cut in quickly when Aiden opened his mouth, although Aiden didn't really know what he actually wanted to say in rebuttal. "Your father was the previous Captain and everyone knew he was grooming you to take the spot. You made lieutenant by the time you were twenty-two, which was impressive.
